Wuḍū and Wearing Rings or Bracelets

Issue No.321- If a ring, bracelet, etc., do not prevent water from reaching the skin, they are not harmful to wuḍū, and one can move them around while they are on so that water reaches beneath them. And if after wuḍū, one sees a ring or other impediment on his hand and does not know whether at the time of performing wuḍū, it had been there or not, his wuḍū is valid provided that there is a possibility that while performing wuḍū he did take notice of this matter.

Issue No.323- If a person doubts whether his wuḍū has become void, he should regard it as valid. On the contrary, if he had no wuḍū and doubts whether he has performed wuḍū or not, he should assume that he has not performed it.

Issue No. 337Rules regarding Wuḍū

Acts for Which Wuḍū Is Obligatory

Issue No.337- It is obligatory to perform wuḍū for the following six acts:1- For the obligatory prayers, (except the ṣalāt al-mayyit (the prayer for the dead individual).2- For the forgotten sajdah and tashahhud.3- For the obligatory circumambulation (ṭawāf) of the holy Ka‘bah. (It should be noted that the circumambulation (ṭawāf) which are a part of ḥajj or ‘umrah are counted as obligatory circumambulations, though the ḥajj or ‘umrah might be recommended).4- When a person has made a vow (nadhr), or covenant (‘ahd), or taken an oath to be with wuḍū.5- When a person has made a vow (nadhr) to touch the script of the Holy Qur'an with his body (if this vow (nadhr) is preferred from the religious point of view such as when he would like to kiss the script of the holy Qur'an out of respect).6- For washing and making the holy Qur’an ṭāhir which has become najis, or for taking it out from a najis place in which it has fallen, when it necessitates touching the script of the holy Qur'an with hand, or other parts of the body.

Things Which Invalidate Wuḍū

Issue No.344- Wuḍū becomes void on account of the following eight things:1- Discharge of urine. 2- Discharge of faeces. 3- Discharge of gas through the rear. 4- A sleep that overcomes the mind and on account of which eyes do not see and the ears do not hear. However, if the eyes do not see but the ears hear, wuḍū does not become void. 5- Things due to which a person loses his sensibility, like intoxication, unconsciousness or insanity (as an obligatory precaution). 6- Entering the state of istiḥāḍah for women (undue menses) which will be explained later. 7- Every state which requires ghusl, like janābah. 8- Touching the dead body of a human being.

How to Ensure That the Body Has Been Washed Properly

Issue No.379- In order to ensure that all three parts of the body, i.e., the head and neck, the right side and the left side of the body, are washed thoroughly, one should, while washing a part, also include some portion of the other parts with it as a recommended precaution.
